Isaksen 15th at Italy World Cup
After a brilliant ride, Margaux Isaksen
(Fayetteville, Ark.) found herself just 31 seconds behind the leaders heading into her strongest event, the combined run/shoot on Saturday at Modern Pentathlon's World Cup #2 in Sassari, Italy. But the 2008 Olympian struggled in the day's final event and dropped to 15th postion in the final standings.
Isaksen began the day by notching 17 victories in the fencing competition which placed her 17th. She followed that up with a 16th-place finish in the swim, clocking a time of 2:16.51. In the third event of the day, the ride, Isaksen placed a solid 9th and added 1200 points to her total. But a 21st-place finish in the combined run/shoot (a time of 12:31.27) knocked her back to 15th position with 5168 total points.
Russia's Donata Rimsaite won the gold medal with 5388 points, followed by Anastasiya Prokopenko of Belarus with 5368 and Freyja Prentice of Great Britain with 5332 points.
The men's final will be held on Sunday but the three U.S. competitors failed to advance during Friday's qualification round. The next World Cup event will be held in Budapest, Hungary, May 5-8.
