U.S. Men Fail to Advance to World Championship Final
The U.S. men's team failed to advance to the finals during Wednesday's qualification round at the 50th Modern Pentathlon Senior World Championships in Chengdu, China. There were three qualification groups in the field with the top 12 in each group earning berths in Friday's individual final.
Will Brady (Howell, Mich.) had the top U.S. performance placing 16th in Group C with 4200 points. Brady was 28th in the fencing event with seven victories, 14th in the swim with a time of 2:06.60, and 5th in the combined run/shoot in a time of 11:15.06. Also in Group C was Dennis Bowsher (Dallas, Texas) who finished 18th with 4180 points. Bowsher was 27th in the fencing with eight wins, 7th in the swim (2:04.62) and 12th in the combined (11:34.48).
Group B saw Sam Sacksen (Somerset, Pa.) place 17th and Eli Bremer (Monument, Colo.) finish 28th. Sacksen totaled 4192 points by finshing 16th in fencing (13 victories), 16th in the swim (2:10.83) and 16th in the combined run/shoot (11:52.98). Bremer was 24th in the fencing (10 victories), 5th in the swim (2:04.87), and did not compete in the combined, finishing with 2016 points.
Thursday's competition features the women's individual qualifcation round with 2008 Olympian Margaux Isaksen (Fayetteville, Ark.) as the lone U.S. representative.
The U.S. team is coached by Janusz Peciak, two-time world champion from Poland (1977 & 1981), and riding coach Michael Cintas.
Fans around the world will have the chance to watch these and other great athletes and share in the excitement of Modern Pentathlon. The UIPM will broadcast the finals LIVE on Internet TV at pentathlon.org on 3 and 4 September at 15:30 local time (GMT +8 hours). The broadcast will feature highlights from the fencing and swimming events as well as live coverage of the riding and combined events. The Championships will also be broadcasted live in Hungary, Czech Republic, Russia and Lithuania in a landmark TV deal.
