Charlotte, N.C. -- Team USA’s top two elite modern pentathletes will train in Charlotte this week under the direction of two-time Olympic Coach David Marsh.
2008 Olympian Margaux Isaksen (Fayetteville, Ark.) was just 16 when she placed 21st at the Beijing Games. Now 18, Isaksen capped off a busy summer competition calendar with a career-best 12th place finish at the world championships, up five places from her 17th-place finish last year. She is currently ranked 8th in the world and her focus is on earning a medal in 2012.
Joining Isaksen in Charlotte is USA Pentathlon elite men’s team member Will Brady (Howell, Mich.). Brady, 25, has performed solidly all year at international competitions achieving an impressive 5th-place finish in the combined event during the qualification round of the world championships. Brady, currently ranked 27th in the world, continues to prove he can run and swim with the best in the world.
“The sky’s the limit for these talented pentathletes who continue to make great strides leading up to the 2012 Summer Games in London, with an opportunity for both to medal,” said Rob Stull, Olympian and managing director of USA Pentathlon. “David Marsh, director of coaching for SwimMAC, and the City of Charlotte have opened their arms to these athletes to train and focus on the work to be done to bring home the gold.”
While in Charlotte, the pentathletes will train side by side with SwimMAC's Team Elite swimmers, each of whom share the same Olympic gold-medal mindset. SwimMAC is USA Swimming's first center established exclusively for professional and post-collegiate swimmers, and as such, has become a model for the sport's national governing body to continue their mission of assisting the United States Olympic Committee in maintaining its position as the world’s preeminent swimming power at international and Olympic competitions.
“I am excited to have the pentathletes join Team Elite for training here in Charlotte,” stated Marsh. "Rarely do the country’s top Olympic hopefuls, across different disciplines, have the ability to train together under one roof with a shared focus on winning. This is a unique opportunity for all of the athletes to concentrate on a winning mindset, goal setting, and sharing the experience of working together toward being the best at what they do."
USA Pentathlon and SwimMAC are developing plans to host a pentathlon clinic and camp next summer for athletes of various skill levels to learn more about the sport and to hone their skills.
In February, the United States will host over 50 countries as part of the international series of pentathlon World Cup competitions. That will mark the beginning of the USA Pentathlon season for Isaksen and Brady and will be the first of four World Cup events that will be held on United States soil, one in each year through 2013. The City of Charlotte is a potential host city for national and international pentathlon competition.
The Modern Pentathlon, introduced at the 5th Olympiad in Stockholm (SWE) in 1912, comprises the contemporary sports of pistol shooting, fencing, swimming, horse riding and running. In its creation it was believed that this event, above all others, would test an athlete’s moral qualities as much as his or her physical resources and skills, producing thereby the ideal, complete athlete. Today the modern pentathlon is highly regarded for its inherent demands of courage, co-ordination, physical fitness, self-discipline and flexibility in ever changing circumstances.
