May 13, 2010, 7:27 p.m. (ET)

Nathan Schrimsher (Roswell, N.M) has been named to the inaugural Youth Olympic Games team to represent the U.S. in the sport of modern pentathlon. The Youth Olympic Games will be held August 14-26 in Singapore.

Schrimsher, who turns 18 on May 22, qualified for the Youth Olympic Games on December 8, 2009, when he finished third at the Youth Olympic Games Qualification event in Buenos Aires, Argentina. But his spot on the team required final approval by the United States Olympic Committee, which was granted on May 12.

The qualification event was held to determine which athletes and their perspective countries would be invited by the International Olympic Committee to participate in the Youth Olympic Games to be held in Singapore in 2010. Only two athletes would be appointed winners from the Americas for modern pentathlon.  Schrimsher won this coveted position for the USA and Mexico won the other appointment.
