Opening Day Results at Youth A World Championships

The 2010 Youth A World Championships opened on Thursday in Uppsala, Sweden, with the individual men's fencing and individual men's and women's swimming competition. Six U.S. athletes are competing in the event.

Andrew Wiggins (Laurel, Miss.) is the top American in the men's competition after two events. He stands in 73rd place overall with 1812 points. Wiggins placed 89th in the fencing event with 10 victories and 34 defeats, but rebounded nicely in the swim with a time of 2:10.74, good for 29th place.
Ryan Anderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) is 77th overall after finishing 61st in the fencing with 18 wins and 26 defeats, and placing 79th in the swim with a time of 2:25.81. Anderson has a total of 1792 points.
Cory Cranford (Morrison, Colo.) is in 87th place in the men's competition with 1632 points. He had 19 victories and 25 defeats in the fencing competition, good for 56th place, and recorded a time of 2:40.74 in the swim to place 87th.
In the women's swimming event, Samantha Achterberg (Littleton, Colo.) led the way for the U.S. with a time of 2:30.83 to place 42nd. Anna Olesinski (Roswell, N.M.) sits in 44th place after clocking in at 2:31.56, and McKenzie West (Sedalia, Colo.) placed 66th in 2:47.20.
The individual competition concludes on Friday with the women's fencing event and the men's and women's combined run/shoot.
