On Friday, November 6th, I was able to tour the Lakeshore Foundation facility which has been named as an Olympic Training Facility.
Located about 15 minutes from the Birmingham, AL airport, the facility offers dorms, dining, and training space.
Primarily a rehabilitation facility and heavily used by USA Paralympics, the facility offers youth and junior pentathletes a tremendous short-term training opportunities. They are not equipped to have full-time resident athletes.
The main complex has a 25yd pool, strength and conditioning gym, a shooting range, gymnasiums for fencing and an indoor track.
The dorms have bunk and single beds with a catered cafeteria. There are computers for internet usage and a television for entertainment.
Transportation is provided by the Lakeshore foundation. They have vans that can be assigned (with driver) to each group.
The Birmingham fencing club has offered equipment and training for any camps/clinics or competitions.
The only unknown is riding. I was unable to verify an equestrian club in the area even though the director told me it was a possibility.
The cost for the Lakeshore Foundation is the same as any USOC OTC (approx. $45/day/person).
Lakeshore is ready to host us whenever we would like to utilize their facility.
