Cheryl Murphy took Team USA's second of two medals at the 2013 World Combat Games in St. Petersburg, Russia. Cheryl narrowly lost her first match to Hafsa Seyda Burucu from Turkey but then came back to defeat Kamila Warda from Poland and Charlotte Munro from New Zealand. After a loss to Inga Sheroziia of Russia in the semifinal match, Cheryl captured the Women's Kumite -68kg Bronze Medal by avenging her earlier loss and defeating Burucu of Turkey.
Tom Scott narrowly missed the medal podium taking 4th overall. Tom defeated Rene Smaal of The Netherlands and Abdelrahman Mohamed Ali Mohamed of Egypt before narrowly losing to Rafael Aghayev in pool play. Current WKF World Champion Luigi Busa was able to slip past Tom during the semifinal, and Noah Bitsch of Germany went on to win the Bronze Medal match.
Team USA took two Bronze Medals overall with Cheryl's Kumite Medal and Sakura Kokumai's Bronze Medal in Women's Kata yesterday. Team USA represented us well and we also want to thank Head Coach Tokey Hill, Team Leader Brody Burns, and WKF Referee Fariba Madani for being on the trip.
