World Games Update
Team USA Takes Home One Bronze at the 2013 World Games
Sunday, July 28 (10:25am) - The World Games concluded with much better results on Day two. Cheryl Murphy defeated Meltem Hocaoglu from Turkey to take the Bronze Medal in the Women's -68kg Kumite category. Cheryl lost the semifinal match against Colombia in a hantei decision that the hometown crowd enjoyed, but didn't work out for Team USA. Cheryl was fighting until the end to score and not let the match go to decision, but wasn't quite able to come up with a point. Tom Scott finished in Fourth Place after losing to reigning World Champion and eventual World Games Champion Rafael Aghayev in the semifinal match. Tom faced Egypt in the Bronze Medal match but came up a little short taking fourth.
This was a key event for Team USA and had been designated an Operation Gold Event by the US Olympic Committee. Both Tom & Cheryl will receive stipends from the USOC based upon their results. Both will be attending the World Combat Games along with Sakura Kokumai this October in St. Petersburg, Russia. This event will also feature the top 8 competitors in the world, with the Combat Games athletes coming from the 2012 World Championships & 2013 Continental Championships.

RESULTS & Medal Table
Friday, July 26 (6:15pm) - Day one did not go the way we hoped. Sakura, Brandis, and Brian each put out great efforts but came up short. Sakura won one match and lost two, Brandis tied one and lost one, and Brian narrowly lost both matches. It is key to note that this is a round robin competition as opposed to the traditional repechage bracketing. Also, these athletes represent the best in the world. To qualify for the World Games, you had to finish in the top two of the World Championships or win the Continental Championships. Tomorrow will feature Tom and Cheryl competing in the -75kg and -68kg categories respectively. Let's keep the cheers going to Team USA!
Friday, July 26 - Team USA begins their run for the Gold today in Cali, Colombia at the 2013 World Games. We'll post updates here and on our Twitter (www.twitter.com/usankf) and Facebook (www.facebook.com/usakarateteam) feeds.
