Two of the oldest judo clubs in Texas joined forces to bring Olympic Bronze Medalist Marti Malloy to a clinic over the weekend that attracted more than 150 kids and adults.
“She taught me something, and I’m old,” joked Mike Woodson, sensei at Denton Junior Optimist Judo, which sponsored the clinic. ‘I thought I knew it all!”
“Marti was great,” said Ken Scialo, sensei at Eastside Dojo where the clinic was held in Plano, TX – Eastside Judo is the new name and location of Dallas Judo. “She connected easily with kids of all ages. They were all inspired by her. Marti spoke as comfortably about her competition losses as she did her wins. She really imparted to the kids her experience of growing into a champion, that the losses, if taken as lessons, were crucial to that growth.”
Added to the bronze medal that Malloy won at the Olympic Games in London last summer, she recently took a silver at the World Championships in Rio de Janeiro, cementing her status as a top fighter in the 57 kg. division on the world stage and giving her lots of star appeal for wowing the crowd in Texas.
