Next Gen Of Olympians Compete At Scholastics

By Ernest Pund | March 25, 2013, 12:13 a.m. (ET)

More than 400 young fighters convened in Miami this weekend from across the country, Hawaii to New York, for a shot at the best competition on the mats and a prized position on one of USA Judo’s junior world teams.

It is very likely that from the ranks of these ambitious young competitors will come our nation’s next generation of Olympians. Kayla Harrison (NYAC/Team FORCE, Wakefield, Mass.) was a Junior World Champion in 2008 before she won our nation’s first Olympic gold medal at the Games in London last summer.

Those taking gold medals Saturday in the Juvenile B divisions, born 1996-98, won positions on USA Judo’s World Cadet Team that will fight against other cadet teams from around the world at the International Judo Federation’s World Cadet Championships back in Miami, Aug. 8 – 11.

Those taking gold medals with birthdays 1993 – 98 among IJF junior divisions earned spots on USA Judo’s Junior World Team that will compete in Ljubljana, Slovenia, Oct. 24 – 27.

As you can see from the lists below, some young fighters made both teams. In addition, these athletes will be offered spots on USA Judo’s team headed to the Junior Pan American Championships, July 11 – 14 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
