Boys Team Competition and Training in Russia
Boys’ Team Competition and Training in Russia
(birth years 1996-1998)
This is open only to Male athletes born in 1996, 1997 and 1998.
USA Judo will be able to participate in a multi-national training camp for a week. The camp will include the Russia A & B Teams as well as the A & B Teams from both Moscow and St Petersburg, plus Teams from Japan, Latvia, Lithuania and Germany. We will then finish up the trip competing in the Vladimir Putin International Youth Team Judo Tournament at the end of the week.
USA Judo is able to offer full room and board for seven days for a total of eight athletes with one in each of the following weight divisions 50, 55, 60, 66, 73, 81,
90, +90. Each athlete will be responsible for his own airfare and visa application fees. We are estimating that the plane fare and visa will cost approximately $1,300. Please factor this amount into your deliberations as you decide whether you want to apply for the Team spot for your weight division. NOTE: Your ONLY expense
will be airfare and visa.
The travel dates need to be March 25 – March 31, 2013. Departure from the United States can most sensibly be done from Miami, since many athletes from other parts of the country will already be IN Miami for the Scholastic Nationals/Cadet/Junior World Team Trials. You can do a multiple destination ticket on most on-line services so that you can arrange to fly to St Petersburg and then return to your home airport. Delegation members flying from other parts of the country will probably find it most cost-efficient need to make their connections so that they can go through JFK Airport in New York.
Parents, families and Coaches are welcome and encouraged to travel with their children. You must understand – this is still Russia and once we arrive there, the rules are the rules. The hotel arrangement is based on athletes rooming with each other. We cannot provide room and board if you choose to have your child stay with you.
The host hotel is only five minutes from the venue. The host club is the club and training site that former Russian President Vladimir Putin works out at when he is in St Petersburg.
Travel to Russia requires a visa. Once you have indicated your interest and applied for the Team spot, we will provide you with all of the necessary paperwork.
NOTE: for all travelers – in order to get a visa, your passport MUST be valid until at least October 13, 2013.
Eligibility: You MUST
1. be a US citizen
2. have a US Passport that does not expire before October 13, 2013
3. have competed at Junior National or International levels
If you are interested in making this trip, I need a response from a parent, NOT from the athlete, who is a minor. The response needs to come to me at firstname.lastname@example.org not later than close of business on February 19, 2013. No exceptions for any reason.
I need you to indicate what weight division. We understand that our athletes are growing and that you may no longer be in the same division you competed at last year. Please do not engage in crazy weight cuts. Instead, put in your request based on what you weigh, and what you INTEND to weigh for competition for the remainder of the year. In case we get multiple applicants for the same weight, we will go to the current rosters, the 2012 year end rosters (since most people who are in new age groupings in 2013 will not yet have had any opportunity to earn roster points in the new age bracket), and other competition records.
A word of encouragement – if you are not the highest ranked athlete and you really want to do this and you are committed to your efforts to improve, put in your request anyway. You never know who does, or doesn’t apply or what may be possible unless you try.
Please give this your serious consideration. I MUST have your responses, emailed to me at email@example.com, NO LATER THAN close of business on February
19, 2013. There is NO room for margin on the cutoff date as we have a February
15 deadline for getting the passports submitted.
