U.S. Junior athletes picked up a gold, silver and bronze medal on Day One of the highly competitive Harnes International Judo Championships in France.
Jackson Butler (Tri-Valley Judo, Pleasanton, CA) went undefeated with a 5-0 record to take the top spot in the Boys' 50 kg. division. Butler has been on a roll this year, taking gold at a number of U.S. and Pan American tournaments including the USA Judo’s Junior Olympics and the Pan American Championships in El Salvador.
Erica Paccione (Cape Coral, FL) took a Silver in the Girls' 52 kg. group.
Mariah Holguin (Universal Judo, San Antonio, TX) dropped a heartbreaker in the semi-finals and finished the day with a Bronze medal at 48 kg.
The first day of the Harnes International Judo Championships featured competition for athletes born 2000-2001. Brackets included nine female and 10 male divisions fighting on nine mats with competition running all day, reported Jim Hrbek, Head Instructor at Universal Judo in San Antonio and chairman of USA Judo’s Junior Athlete Performance Committee.
