Draws are Cast: Lightweights Fight Tomorrow. Watch your athletes streaming LIVE at WWW.IPPON.TV

By Ernest Pund | Aug. 25, 2013, 8:40 p.m. (ET)

The Draws have been completed for the Senior World Championships set to begin in Rio de Janeiro tomorrow with the light weights leading the charge, including Alexa Liddie, 48 kg, of Colorado Springs, and Nicholas Kossor of Scotia, NY, competing at 60 kg.

You can see the brackets with the first matches in all weight divisions at WWW.IPPON.ORG. Then go to the international ranking lists at WWW.IJF.ORG to see what your favorite athletes are up against. Then head for WWW.IPPON.TV to watch your athletes fighting LIVE.

In his first round, Kossor (Jason Morris Judo Center/NYAC, Glenville, NY) faces Lenin Preciado of Ecuador, who stands far lower in the world ranking roster. But then Kossor could quickly come face-to-face against the No. 3 ranked Felipe Kitadai of Brazil, fighting on home turf, in their pool … First things first, though!

“In terms of the competition I'm feeling very positive about it,” Kossor said. “My training back at the Jason Morris Judo Center has been going so well.  Jason & Teri did a fantastic job of preparing me for this.”

Alexa Liddie, (USA Judo Training Site, Olympic Training Center, Colorado Springs, CO) steps out of the gate with a lucky bye but then could face one of a few top-ranked athletes in pretty short order, fighting either Cuba’s Maria Laborde or 7th ranked Valentina Moscatt of Italy. Eventually, Liddie would probably face the World’s No. 5 in the world, Eva Csernoviczki of Hungary before reaching the semi-finals.

Late in the week, we’ll see Liddie’s teammate at the Olympic Training Center, Samantha Blieier, who moved up to the 78 kg division vacated by Olympic Gold Medalist Kayla Harrison, who now fights at 70 kg. Recovering from knee surgery, Harrison is not competing at the Worlds this year.

Bleier has been climbing podiums recently for a gold medal at the Pan American Open in San Salvador, a gold at the Pan American Open in Montevideo, Uruguay, and a silver at the Pan American Open in Buenos Aires, Argentina.  “I've been watching the players at the top, figuring I would meet one of them on my way to finals. I saw I have China first then Tchumeo second round.”

Audrey Tcheumeo of France is ranked No. 3 in the world, but Bleier has been vaulting up through the raking list with her recent victories, climbing from 60th to 21st in less than a year. She steps out Friday with lots of momentum.

Tune in LIVE at WWW.IPPON.TV.
