Aug. 01, 2013, 3:47 p.m. (ET)

August 1, 2013, Miami, FL - Competition starts next week in Miami at the World Cadet Championships, but nearly 200 of the top teenage fighters from about 30 nations will be looking for an edge at a USA Judo camp that begins tomorrow at the Doral Golf Resort and Spa, venue of the tournament.

Among those at the camp will be most of the 19 members of the U.S. team, coming from all over the nation, Hawaii to New York, California to Florida. Six are coming from the Sunshine State, a powerhouse of young judo talent. See the US ROSTER. The camp, led by coaches at USA Judo Training Site, Ki-Itsu-Sai, of Coconut Creek, FL. runs through Monday.

There is a lot at stake at the World Cadets. More than 550 teenagers, 15-17 years old, have come from all over the world hunting for the top competition, a shot at $50,000 in prize money for taking a spot on the podium and a chance to qualify for the Youth Olympic Games next year in Nanjing. Particularly large teams are coming from Russia, Mongolia, japan and Kazakhstan.

This tournament is a key stepping stone for virtually any young athlete headed to elite senior competitions, including the Olympic Games.
