USA Judo’s five-member female judo squad took GOLD today in team competition at the super-elite Pan American Championships in Costa Rica, capping a weekend with U.S. athletes having already scored a total of 10 medals in individual competition.

The U.S. women’s team defeated Mexico 5-0 in the finals to claim the championship after downing Canada and Brazil at a tournament reserved for the best-of-the-best from nations throughout the Americas.

Fighting on the U.S. women’s team were: Olympic Bronze Medalist Marti Malloy, 57 kg. (USA Judo National Training Site, San Jose State University Judo, San Jose, CA), Angelica Delgado, 52 kg. (USA Judo National Training Site, Ki-Itsu-Sai Training Center, Miami, FL), Hannah Martin, 63 kg. (Jason Morris Judo Center/NYAC, Glenville, NY), Katie Sell, 70 kg. Team competition in judo has become increasingly important as the International Judo Federation and other organizations mount a bid to include team competition at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Each nation put five players forward and the best-of-five fights take the team match.

Fighting on the U.S. men’s team were Nick Delpopolo, 73 kg. (Budokan Judo Club, Miami, FL), Brad Bolen, 66 kg. (Jason Morris Judo Center/NYAC, Glenville, NY), Travis Stevens, 81 kg. ( USA Judo National Training Site, Pedro’s Judo Center/NYAC, Wakefield, Mass.), Jacob Larsen, 90 kg. (Boulder Judo Training Center, USA Judo National Training Site, Olympic Training Center, CO), and +100kg: Deshawn Howard, 100+ kg. (Harvey’s Judo, Jackson, MS).
