Gold and Silver Added to Bronze By US Athletes At PanAm Champs

Team USA takes a gold, two silver and two bronze medals on Day Two of the Pan American Championships in Costa Rica today.

Nick Delpopolo, 73 kg. (Budokan Judo Club, Miami, FL), took the team’s gold medal today, fighting through brackets thick with the toughest competition in the Americas. He finished the final match against Cuba with a throw for ippon.

Olympic Bronze Medalist Marti Malloy, 57 kg. (USA Judo National Training Site, San Jose State University Judo, San Jose, CA) and Adonis Diaz, 55 kg. (Budokan Judo Club, Miami, FL) captured the two silver medals for Team USA.

Brad Bolen, 66 kg. (Jason Morris Judo Center/NYAC, Glenville, NY) and Nick Kossor, 60 kg. (Jason Morris Judo Center/NYAC, Glenville, NY) rounded off the terrifically successful tour with two more bronze medals, added to five bronze taken by the U.S. athletes yesterday at this pinnacle tournament.

Only the top athletes from throughout the Americas qualify for the Pan American Championships. For winning, they get lots of international ranking points and the experience that puts them on a path for the World Championships and Olympic Games. All the continental federations, including the European, Asian and Pan American, hold these continental championships, which are among the most prestigious in the world.

Taking bronze yesterday were Travis Stevens, 81 kg. ( USA Judo National Training Site, Pedro’s Judo Center/NYAC, Wakefield, Mass.), and Jonathan Fernandez, 81 kg. (Baragua Judo Kai, Miami, FL.). In the 90kg division, Jacob Larsen, (Boulder Judo Training Center, USA Judo National Training Site, Olympic Training Center, CO), joined his teammates in taking a bronze.

Among the women, Hannah Martin, 63 kg. (Jason Morris Judo Center/NYAC, Glenville, NY), and Olympic Gold Medalist Kayla Harrison, 70 kg. (USA Judo National Training Site, Pedro’s Judo Center/NYAC, Wakefield, MA), took bronze.
