Results: Day 1 of Senior National Championships

We have some new national champions!

Results from the first day of USA Judo’s Senior National Championships are in with some fighters returning to the top spot on the podium as expected.

Kayla Harrison, 78 kg (USA Judo National Training Site, Pedro’s Judo Center/NYAC), renewed her grip on the national title. Marti Malloy, 57 kg (USA Judo National Training Site, San Jose State University Judo, San Jose, CA), also took a championship. Harrison and Malloy took gold and bronze respectively at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Taking gold among women in the 63 kg division was Hannah Martin (Jason Morris Judo Center, Glenville, NY), who recently took a silver and bronze at the Pan American Opens in Uruguay and Argentina last month.

Katie Sell, 70 kg. (USA Judo Training Site, Olympic Training Center, CO), took gold in her division.  And Nina Cutro-Kelly, 78+ kg (Universal Judo, San Antonio, TX) took gold.

Nick Delpopolo, 73 kg (Budokan Judo Club, Miami, FL) took gold in his division.

Taking gold among men, 81kg., was Jonathan Fernandez (Baragua Judo Kai, Miami, FL). Two-time Olympian Travis Stevens, 81 kg (USA Judo Training Site, Pedro’s Judo Center/NYAC, Wakefield, Mass.) was forced to withdraw from that division because of an injury, leaving that highly competitive bracket open to challengers. Stevens had suffered a partially torn hamstring and decided to recover instead of risking further injury in advance of the Pan American Championships this coming week in Costa Rica.

More gold was collected by: Gary St. Leger, 90 kg (Legro Sports/NYAC, Brooklyn, NY); L.A. Smith III, 100 kg. (Cranford Judo Karate Club, Cranford, N.J.) and Marktorria Fletcher, 100+ kg. (Atlanta Judo Midtown, Atlanta, GA).

See the complete RESULTS. Competition resumes tomorrow. See the DRAWS.
