March 28, 2012, 12 p.m. (ET)

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) – Three members of Team USA will compete at the World Masters Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan this weekend. The team, coached by 1999 World Champion Jimmy Pedro (Methuen, Mass.) includes the following veterans of World Cup and Pan American podiums: Travis Stevens (Wakefield, Mass. / NYAC / USA Judo National Team FORCE / 81kg), five-time World Cup medalist and four-time Pan American medalist Nick Delpopolo (Wakefield, Mass. / NYAC / USA Judo National Team FORCE / 73kg), four-time World Cup medalist Marti Malloy (San Jose, Calif. / USA Judo National Training Site at San Jose State University / 57kg), four-time World Cup medalist and 2010 Pan Am silver medalist Reigning World Champion Kayla Harrison (Wakefield, Mass. / NYAC / USA Judo National Team FORCE / 78kg) was invited to compete, but was forced to withdraw from the event due to blizzard conditions that prevented her from leaving Boston. The World Masters Championships is an invitation-only event in which the top-16 athletes in each weight division compete. “I am delighted that four of our U.S. athletes have qualified for the World Masters tournament this year, especially considering that we did not have anybody qualify last year,” Coach Pedro said. “These young athletes have had a lot of success this year on the world stage, and I am looking forward to seeing how they compete against the top 16 in the world at this event. One thing is for sure, they have come a long way this past year and as long as they keep pushing, they will be ready for London 2012.”
