Mar 07 National President’s Cup Championships Day 2 Results

June 15, 2009, 12:01 a.m. (ET)

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) - Competition was held in the light and open weight senior elite divisions as well as the master's divisions on Sunday at the National President's Cup Championships in Duluth, Ga.

One of the day's greatest upsets occurred when Vitaliy Vanyan (North Hollywood, Calif. / Mojica) defeated 2008 Senior National Champion Nick Kossor (Glenville, N.Y. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center) in the semifinals of the 60kg division.

Vanyan advanced to the finals against reigning Senior National Champion Aaron Kunihiro (Wakefield, Mass. / NYAC / USA Judo National Team FORCE) who won the match when Vanyan received a direct hansukomake and was eliminated from the tournament.

With three of the four Senior Nationals medalists in attendance, the 57kg division was one of the event's strongest.  In a rematch of the 2008 U.S. Open final, top seed Hannah Martin (Glenville, N.Y. / NYAC / USA Judo National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center) defeated Hana Carmichael (Wakefield, Mass. / USA Judo National Team FORCE) to win the gold medal.

Second-ranked Angelica Delgado (Miami, Fla. / USA Judo National Training Site at North Miami) defeated Senior Nationals bronze medalist Mindy Chow (Honolulu, Hawaii / Hawaii Tenri) to win the bronze.  Veronica Graves (Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center) also placed third, defeating Kim Carpenter (Burnt Hills, N.Y. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center) in the bronze medal match.  Carpenter, a 2009 World Team member in the 52kg division, fought up to 57kg for the first time in major competition.

Former National Champion Natalie Lafon (Glenville, N.Y. / USA Judo National Training site at the Jason Morris Judo Center) won the 48kg division, pinning two-time Senior Nationals medalist Angela Creutzberger (Ballston, N.Y. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center) and choking 2009 National medalist Taylor Ibera (Honolulu, Hawaii / Hawaii Tenri) to win the gold.

Jeanette Rodriguez (Davie, Fla. / USA Judo National Training Site at North Miami), a 2007 Pan Am Games medalist in the 48kg division, won her first major title as a 52kg player in a division that also included top-ranked Kayla Chappell (Moore, Okla. / USA Stars) and 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Judo Champion Tracy Nagai (Bellevue, Wash. / Budokan Judo).
