Jun 13 Andrew Porras and Jillian Roman to Fight for Gold Tonight; Helen Delpopolo Wins Gold Medal in Early Rounds

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) - Team USA continued its success at the Pan American Juvenile and Junior Championships in San Salvador, El Salvador on Saturday with four athletes winning medals in early rounds and six more competing in the evening medal matches.

Competing in her first Junior Pan Ams, Helen Delpopolo (Westfield, N.J.) won a gold medal earlier in the day in the 78kg division. 

Colin Robinson (Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center / Boulder Judo Training Center / +100kg), Chrissy Chow (Honolulu, Hawaii / Hawaii Tenri / 52kg) and Armen Babayan (Alendale, Calif. / Valley Judo Institute / 100kg) each won silver medals earlier in the day as well.

Five-time Junior Pan Am Team member Andrew Porras (Hialeah, Fla. / USA Judo National Training Site at North Miami) will be fighting in the gold medal final in the 73kg division while first-time team member Jillian Roman (Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center / Boulder Judo Training Center) will be fighting for gold at 63kg.

The following players will be competing in the bronze medal finals: 

  • Veronica Prado (Coral Springs, Fla. / USA Judo National Training Site at North Miami / 44kg)
  • Kelsi Bostic (Anderson, Ind. / Judan Judo / 70kg)
  • Kyle Taketa (Torrance, Calif. / Gardena Judo / 66kg)
  • Michael Harrison (Burke, Va. / Sport Judo / 90kg) 

Lisette Abad (San Jose, Calif. / After-School All-Stars / 48kg) and Matthias Montez (Brentwood, Calif. / After-School All-Stars / 81kg) also competed, but both were eliminating after losing their opening two matches.
