Oct 24 Vashkulat and Carmichael Go 1-1 at Junior Worlds

Oct. 24, 2008, 1:34 p.m. (ET)

(Colorado Springs, Colo.) - Kyle Vashkulat (Glenville, N.Y. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center) and Hana Carmichael (Wellington, Fla. / USA Judo National Team FORCE) each won one match and lost a second at the Junior World Championships on Friday.

Competing in the 100kg division, Vashkulat earned Team USA's first match win when he defeated 2006 European Junior Championships silver medalist Adam Juhasz (HUN) by a yuko (quarter-point), but was pinned in the second round by Temuulen Battulga (MGL).

Although Battulga advanced to the semifinals and later won a bronze medal, new rules being used for the Junior World Championships meant that Vashkulat was not carried through to the repechage to fight for bronze.  Instead, since the new rules state that a player must advance to the quarter-finals to compete in the repechage, Vashkulat was eliminated from the tournament.

Carmichael found herself in a similar position in the 57kg division when, after a first-round bye, she defeated  Nazgul Arystanbekova (KAZ) by a yuko, but fell one match short of the quarter-finals when she lost by two waza-aris (half-point) each to 2007 European Junior Champion Automne Pavia (FRA).  Pavia would win the silver medal, but Carmichael was eliminated from the tournament.

In the 63kg division, reigning Senior Nationals silver medalist Paola Genao-Butler (Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center) also has a first-round bye before a second round against Da-Woon Joung (KOR).  The match went into Golden Score (overtime) before Joung pinned Genao-Butler for the win.

Steve Fayzakov (Fresh Meadows, N.Y. / NYAC / Spartak Sports Club) also had a first-round bye in his 90kg, but was thrown for ippon (instant win) in his match against Han-Chieh Tseng (TPE)

Competition continues on Saturday with the women's 70kg and 78kg divisions and the men's 73kg and 81kg divisions.
