JUDO: Stevens to Fight for Gold Tonight at Pan Am Championships

Knight Center. Finals begin at 6 p.m. and will be broadcast live at www.usjudo.org. Stevens, who won his 2007 title as a member of his first senior U.S. Team, had a close first match with three-time Pan Am medalist Emmanuel Lucenti (ARG), but pulled out the win when he pinned Lucenti in overtime after a scoreless first tive minutes. Stevens armbarred his next two opponents to advance to the semifinals. Although he was down by a penalty against Richard Leon (VEN), Stevens came back in the last 10 seconds to throw Leon for a yuko and advance to the gold medal match against Guilherme Luna (BRA). World silver medalist Ronda Rousey (Wakefield, Mass. / NYAC / USA Judo National Team FORCE) had a first round bye before fighting 2008 Hamburg Super World Cup Champion Yalennis Castillo (CUB). Rousey threw Castillo for yuko and waza-ari scores and led throughout the match, but Castillo took Rousey to the ground in the last 15 seconds where she won the match with a pin. Rousey threw Nadjeda Gena (HAI) 16 seconds into her next match to advance to the bronze medal round where she will fight Catherine Roberge (CAN). Rousey beat Roberge for the bronze medal match at the 2007 Pan Ams. Garry St. Leger (Brooklyn, N.Y. / NYAC / Legrosports Starrett), 2007 Pan Am bronze medalist, had a first round bye in the 90kg division and then threw Guillermo Urriola (CHI) in the quarter-finals. In the semis, St. Leger controlled his match with Diego Rosatti (ARG), but Rosatti was injured with 10 seconds on the clock and the medical staff spent several minutes stopping Rosatti's bleeding. St. Leger got off another solid attack, but still couldn't score and the match went into overtime where St. Leger controlled the match again, but Rosatti caught him with a throw for ippon and won the match, dropping St. Leger into the bronze medal match against Julian Guttierez (MEX). Anthony Turner (Miami, Fla. / USA Judo National Training Site at North Miami) lost his opening match to Albenis Rosales (VEN) by two penalties to one, but came back with two solid performances in the repechage to advance to the bronze medal match. Turner threw Pablo Figueroa (PUR) for a yuko score and later ended the match with a pin. In the next round, Turner took only one penalty, but threw Guillermo Del Rio (MEX) for three yukos and a koka and will fight Jose Vasquez (DOM) in the bronze medal final. Katie Mocco (Glenville, N.Y. / NYAC / USA Judo National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center) lost her first match when she was thrown for ippon by 2007 Pan Am bronze medalist Marylise Levesque (CAN), but she threw Keivi Pinto (VEN) for ippon to advance to the final against eight-time Pan Am medalist Lorena Briceno (ARG). Marti Malloy (San Jose, Calif. / USA Judo National Training Site at San Jose State University) needed a top three placing in the 63kg division to keep her Olympic qualification hopes alive, but Malloy fell short when she was thrown for ippon in the first round by Karina Acosta (MEX). Acosta lost in the next round to former World Champion Daniela Krukower (ARG), eliminating Malloy. Heidi Moore (Englewood, Colo. / Denver Judo) also needed a top finish to come closer to Olympic qualification as a +78kg player, but a first-round loss to Priscila Marques (BRA) eliminated her from the tournament.
