For Immediate Release March 29, 2008 Contact: Nicole Jomantas, 719.271.9937 (cell) Nicole.Jomantas@usajudo.us (Menomonie, Wis.)-Athletes from 9-years-old through collegiate players competed in the first day of the USA Judo Youth and Scholastic National Championships at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Ross MacBaisey (Atlanta, Ga. / Emory) and Allison Clifford (San Jose, Calif. / San Jose State University) both won their second consecutive collegiate national championship titles in the 81kg and 78kg divisions, respectively. Adam Moyerman (Philadelphia, Pa. / Boston University) was named the Outstanding Male Competitor of the tournament after winning four matches all by ippon (instant win) to earn the 73kg gold medal. Sarah Zorman (Austin, Texas / University of Texas), a French citizen, won the 63kg division and Outstanding Female Competitor honors when she beat 2006 Collegiate National Champion Corinne Geier (San Jose, Calif. / San Jose State University) in the final. Geier, a former Senior Nationals medalist, placed third in the division after Paola Genao-Butler (Colorado Springs, Colo. / University of Colorado at Colorado Springs) threw her for ippon in the next match. Freshman Hana Carmichael (Wellington, Fla. / Palm Beach Community College), a top-ranked junior player, won the 57kg division with one of the day's largest throws when she launched Diba Mani (Boulder, Colo. / University of Colorado) in the semifinals. Coming off a bronze medal win at the New York Open earlier this month, Jeremy Liggett (Glenville, N.Y. / Hudson Valley Community College) won the 66kg division in an exciting final match against Joseph Hashimoto (San Jose, Calif. / San Jose State University). Liggett, a former Senior Pan American Championships silver medalist, was up by a yuko (quarter-point) and a koka (smallest points) acquired off a penalty committed by Hashimoto when Liggett threw Hashimoto for a second yuko in the final 30 seconds. Katie Sell (Harlingen, Texas / University of Texas-Brownsville), the reigning Senior Nationals silver medalist, won both the 70kg division and the Jeremy Glick Sportsmanship Award. Anthony Dariano (San Jose, Calif. / San Jose State University), a bronze medalist in the 66kg division won the Tom Lambert Inspirational Award. San Jose State University earned top team honors for both their men's and women's squads. West Point took second place in the men's and women's team categories while Tennessee was the third place women's team and Boston College and the U.S. Air Force Academy shared third place on the men's side. In the junior divisions, Max Golembo (Vernon Hills, Ill. / Cohen's Judo) had one of the day's best performances, coming back from a loss against Yan Kafarskiy (Richmond Hill, N.Y. / Spartak Sports Club) to beat Kafarskiy twice, once with a throw and once with a pin, to win the Juvenile B (15-16-year-olds) 66kg division. In the Juvenile B 60kg division, Kyle Taketa (Torrance, Calif. / Gardena Judo), a 2007 Senior Pan American Championships silver medalist in the 55kg division, won the 60kg division, defeating former Pan American Junior medalist Max Schneider (Chicago, Ill. / Tohkon) and Keith Beauvais (Thornton, Colo. / Northglenn Judo) who is ranked #2 in the senior 55kg division.
