JUDO: Midwestern Championship Results

March 04, 2008, 1 a.m. (ET)
For Immediate Release March 4, 2008 Contact: Nicole Jomantas, 719.271.9937 Nicole.Jomantas@usajudo.us (Colorado Springs, Colo.)-The Midwestern Championships, the third USA Judo Senior E-Level point tournament of the year, was held on Saturday in Waukegan, Ill. with many of the top senior elite athletes in attendance. Kayla Harrison (Wakefield, Mass. / USA Judo National Team FORCE / NYAC) may be going into the Senior National Championships, April 11-12 in Virginia Beach, unseeded, but her win in the 78kg division on Saturday showed that she will be the division's spoiler as she knocked off all three of the top ranked women in the division. In her first match, Harrison beat #3 Rhonda Morrell-Pruitt (Centerville, Ohio / Shudokan Judo Club) to advance to the next round where she beat 2007 Senior Nationals silver medalist Nina Cutro-Kelly (San Antonio, Texas / Universal Judo) by a yuko (quarter-point) to a koka (smallest points). Harrison, who moved up to 78kg in January after winning the U.S. Open in the 63kg division just three months prior, then beat top-ranked Katie Mocco (Glenville, N.Y. / NYAC / USA Judo National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center) to advance to the final. Mocco dropped down to the loser's pool where she armbarred Cutro-Kelly to move back up for another round against Harrison who dominated their second match which she led by a koka, two yukos and a waza-ari (half-point) before pinning Mocco to win the match. With the absence of Harrison in her former 63kg division, two five-time Senior National medalists fought against each other three times to determine who would win gold. Ashlie Martini (Chicago, Ill. / Unaffiliated) beat Anastasia Krivosta (Smithtown, N.Y. / Smithtown YMCA) in their first match, but Krivosta came back to win; After flying under the radar in the 100kg division for much of the last year, 2006 Senior National Champion Djamaldin Aliev (Greenwood, Village, Colo. / Denver Judo / USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center) started off slowly with a loss to two-time Olympian Rene Capo (Naperville, Ill. / Cohen's Judo). Aliev pulled back through, however and fought Capo twice again, throwing him for ippon each time. Seven-time National Champion Sayaka Matsumoto (El Cerrito, Calif. / NYAC / East Bay Judo Institute) won the 48kg division, beating her East Bay teammate Ann Shiraishi (San Francisco, Calif.) twice. Alexa Liddie (Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center), a silver medalist in the 44kg at the 2007 Pan American Championships, competed for the first time in an Olympic weight division at a senior point event, placing third, including two wins over former Senior Nationals medalist Diana Yoshida (Allen, Texas / Dallas Judo). Two-time World team member Heidi Moore (Englewood, Colo. / Denver Judo) nearly lost in the +78kg division when she was armbarred by Ying Wang (CHN / Universal Judo). Moore tapped, but the ippon was recalled when the referees determined that Wang had performed an illegal wristlock, resulting in her elimination from the tournament. Moore then defeated Andrea Bongert (Dubuque, Iowa / Sioux City Judo Club) to win the gold medal. Complete results of the senior elite divisions are as follows: Women's 44kg 1.
