JUDO: San Jose Buddhist Sensei Memorial Tournament Results

For Immediate Release February 11, 2008 Contact: Nicole Jomantas, 719.866.4732 Nicole.Jomantas@usajudo.us (Colorado Springs, Colo.)-One hundred and twenty-five senior elite competitors participated in the San Jose Buddhist Sensei Memorial Tournament, a USA Judo Senior E-Level point event, on Sunday in San Jose, Calif. Highlights from the tournament include the following: - Diana Yoshida (Allen, Texas / Dallas Judo Club) won the women's 48kg division, moving herself into contention for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials for Judo, June 13-14 in Las Vegas, Nev. as she moved from the #9 ranking on the USA Judo Senior Elite National Roster up to #8 with the top eight in each division as of April 12 receiving invitations to the Trials. - Ann Shiraishi (San Francesco, Calif. / East Bay Judo Institute) won the women's 52kg division after placing fifth at the Belgian Ladies Open last week in the 48kg division. - A top-five player in the 57kg division, Janine Nakao (San Jose, Calif. / USA Judo National Training Site at San Jose State University) continues to have the potential to qualify for the Trials in two divisions as she won the 63kg title-a weight where she is currently ranked #3 in the United States. - Former World Team member Molly O'Rourke (El Cerrito, Calif. / East Bay Judo Institute) won all four of her matches in the 78kg division by ippon. - Top-ranked +78kg player Heidi Moore (Englewood, Colo. / Denver Judo) and 2006 Senior National Champion Melinda Swanson (Honolulu, Hawaii / Hawaii Tenri) fought in a round robin division with Moore beating Swanson by ippon. Swanson would go on to win the Open weight division which moves her into the #1 ranking in the division over Moore who competed as an Open weight player at the 2007 Pan Am and World Championships. - Fifteen-year-old Kyle Taketa (Torrance, Calif. / Gardena Judo) won his third E-Level tournament in just over six months when he took gold in the 60kg division. A Pan Am bronze medalist in the 55kg division last year, Taketa began fighting as a 60kg player in August. - Two-time Pan Am Champion Chuck Jefferson (Campbell, Calif. / USA Judo National Training Site at San Jose State University) won the 73kg division in front of his hometown crowd. - Andy Hung (San Jose, Calif. / USA Judo National Training Site at San Jose State University), a 2007 Senior Nationals medalist, went 4-0 to win the day's largest division with 18 players. - Brian Olson (Firestone, Colo. / NYAC / USA Judo National training Site at the Olympic Training Center), a former World medalist, won his fourth competition in the 90kg division since coming out of retirement in August. - Myles Porter (Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center) placed second in the 100kg division behind Rustu Yildirim (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Orange County Judo Training Center), a former top junior in Turkey during the late 1990s. Porter's silver medal marks his return to the Senior National roster where he is only the third legally blind athlete ever to become nationally ranked among sighted players. - Jonathan Leonhardt (San Jose, Calif. / USA Judo National Training Site at San Jose State University), a 2006 Pan Am Team member, won the +100kg division. Second place was taken by James"Brewster"Thompson (Las Vegas, Nev. / USA Judo National Training Site at San Jose State University). Thompson, who is ranked sixth in the division, is continuing his quest to become the oldest judo player ever to qualify for an Olympic Games at 54-years-old.
