BEIJING (AP) Athens champion Xian Dongmei has won China's first gold medal in judo at the Beijing Olympic Games, defeating An Kum Ae of North Korea in the women's 52-kilogram division.

Xian brought the sellout crowd to its feet Sunday when she outscored An in an aggressive match, which had followed a series of winning throws that got her through to the final with little danger.

Algeria's Soraya Haddad defeated Kazakhstan's Sholpan Kaliyeva on points in a lopsided match, and Japan's Misato Nakamura pinned South Korea's Kim Kyong-ok to take the bronzes.
