JUDO: National Champions Take on Cuba in Havana This Week

For Immediate Release April 22, 2008 Contact: Nicole Jomantas, 719.271.9937 (cell) Nicole.Jomantas@usajudo.us (Colorado Springs, Colo.)-Eighteen U.S. athletes have been invited to compete in Havana, Cuba at the Jose Ramon Rodriguez (Men) and Golden Judoguis (Women) Championships on Wednesday and Thursday. This is the second consecutive year that the United States has participated in this prestigious B-Level point tournament that frequently includes World Champions and Olympic medalists. Among the U.S. athletes competing are 2007 bronze medalists Anthony Turner (Miami, Fla. / USA Judo National Training Site at North Miami / +100kg) and Taylor Takata (Colorado Springs, Colo. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Olympic Training Center / 66kg). Turner and Takata, both the #1 U.S. players in their divisions, are expected to compete against some of the same athletes they will be facing at the Pan American Championships, May 8-11 in Miami, Fla. Brittni Bradford (+78kg) and Nina Cutro-Kelly (78kg), both of Universal Judo in San Antonio, Texas, also will be returning for their second trip to Cuba after placing fifth in 2007.
