Apr 15 Taketa and Shadden Win Gold at Pan American Junior Championships

April 15, 2008, midnight (ET)

Kyle Taketa (Torrance, Calif. / Gardena Judo) earned both a gold medal and Fair Player of the Tournament honors on Thursday at the Pan American Junior Championships in the 15-16-year-old 60kg division in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Although only 16, Taketa is a veteran of Pan American events who won the bronze medal as one of the youngest competitors at the Senior Pan American Championships as a 55kg player in 2007.

Taketa threw his first opponent from the Dominican Republic for ippon.  In his next match, Taketa and an Argentinean went through both the regulation and overtime period without and score and Taketa won by referee decision.

Taketa came back in the last nine seconds of the next match to throw a Brazilian with a te garuma (hand wheel through) for a yuko (quarter-point) score.  He ended the tournament with a victory by ippon (instant win) over a player from Uruguay whom he threw with a drop seoi nage (dropping shoulder throw).

Kadee Shadden (Mineral Wells, Texas / Ruben Martin Judo) also won gold to place first in the 15-16-year-old 70kg division, throwing a Brazilian player in the first match with an uchimata (inner thigh throw) for ippon and won her next match against Venezuela by a shido.

Fayzakov threw an Argentinean player for a waza-ari (half-point) with a kata guruma (fireman's carry), but got caught and pinned for ippon in the first round.  He came back, however, and won his next three matches by ippon, throwing a Mexican with a te guruma, a Brazilian with an uchimata (inner thigh throw) and then pinning a Venezuelan to go 3-1 in a round robin division.
