For Immediate Release April 9, 2008 Contact: Nicole Jomantas, 719.271.9937 (cell) Nicole.Jomantas@usajudo.us (Colorado Springs, Colo.)-For 90kg players Garry St. Leger (Brooklyn, N.Y. / NYAC / Legrossports) and Rick Hawn (Wakefield, Mass. / USA Judo National Team FORCE), it all came down to one match at the Liberty Bell Classic, a USA Judo Senior E-Level Point Tournament, held on Sunday in Philadelphia, Pa. St. Leger and Hawn were so closely ranked on the Senior Elite National Roster going into the tournament that the top seed at the USA Judo Senior National Championships, being held this weekend (April 11-12) in Virginia Beach, Va., would come down to which player placed higher at the Liberty Bell. Both players won their first two matches to advance to the final where they would fight for the first time in nearly a year when Hawn won three matches in a row over St. Leger to win the Senior Nationals and World Team Trials in 2007. This time, Hawn was given the first score when St. Leger stepped out of bounds. St. Leger came back to throw Hawn for a yuko (quarter-point), but Hawn threw St. Leger for a waza-ari to regain the lead. St. Leger was given a second penalty for stalling and Hawn ended the match with a second throw for a waza-ari score in the final seconds of the match. The win moved St. Leger from #1 to #2 in the division and Hawn regained the top seed going into the Senior Nationals. The top four players in the 78kg division all were at the Liberty Bell as well with top-ranked Katie Mocco (Glenville, N.Y. / NYAC / USA Judo National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center) won the division, throwing 2005 World Team member Molly O'Rourke (El Cerrito, Calif. / East Bay Judo Institute) for ippon (instant win) in the semifinals and armbarring 2007 Senior Nationals silver medalist Nina Cutro-Kelly (San Antonio, Texas / Universal Judo) in the final. Cutro-Kelly then beat O'Rourke to win the silver medal. Rhonda Morrell-Pruitt (Centerville, Ohio / Shudokan Judo Club), the #3-ranked player in the division, placed fifth after losing to her former teammate Lorey Edwards (Lorain, Ohio / Chu To Bu Judo Club) in the first round and O'Rourke in the repechage. In the 73kg division, 2006 U.S. Open Champion Bobby Lee (Wakefield, Mass. / USA Judo National Team FORCE) went 4-0, defeating Edwin Vallejo (COL) in the final after throwing Justin Flores (Glenville, N.Y. / USA Judo National Training Site at the Jason Morris Judo Center), the 2007 Senior National Champion at 66kg, for a yuko score in an earlier match. The 57kg division included a rematch of the Scholastic Nationals final from two weeks ago in which 2007 Senior Nationals medalist Angelica Delgado (Miami, Fla. / USA Judo National Training Site at North Miami) beat #2-ranked junior Hana Carmichael (Wellington, Fla. / Budokan Judo) twice to win the title. This time, however, Carmichael produced the win, throwing Delgado in the last 15 seconds of the match for a yuko score. Complete senior elite division results are as follows: Women's 44kg 1.
