March 07, 2014, 10:27 a.m. (ET)

The Virginia Beach Convention Center will once again be echoing with the sounds of scored goals and clattering sticks as the final weekend of the 2014 National Indoor Tournament, presented by YOLO Sportswear, kicks off this weekend in Virginia Beach, Va. This year marks the 14th year for the event to be held in Virginia Beach.

“Virginia Beach has been the proud host of the USA Field Hockey National Indoor Championship for more than 10 years,” said Sports Marketing Director, Nancy Heilman of the Virginia Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau. “We have enjoyed watching the event grow and prosper. On behalf of the entire Virginia Beach hospitality community, it is a pleasure to welcome back the USA Field Hockey athletes, coaches, family, fans and staff to Virginia Beach.”

“Returning to Virginia Beach is a little bit like returning home for the final weekend of the National Indoor Tournament,” said Karen Collins, USA Field Hockey Director of Event and Logistics. “The Convention Center staff has been monumental in the planning of this event and we are excited for the variety of hockey to be played over the course of the next three days.”

When it comes to variety, the weekend holds no shortage. Over the last several months, 104 Under-16 Girls divisions qualified from National Indoor Qualifier tournaments around the country for the opportunity to compete on the nation’s largest indoor stage. The Under-16 Girls division will play alongside four Under-17 Boys teams, five Adult Men squads and seven Adult Women teams. In total, approximately 1,200 athletes will take to the courts in the hopes of being crowned victors.

In the Men’s division, many former U.S. players can be found among the teams, including a few current Masters athletes. In the Women’s division, familiar faces typically found along the sidelines taking notes will be showing off their skills on the courts, with many college coaches on the rosters. The U.S. Women’s Indoor National Squad, including Head Coach Denise Zelenak, will also be hitting the court and going for gold.

“This weekend is so exciting because it has an element of mentorship and learning attached to it,” said Liz Tchou, USA Field Hockey Youth Development Manager. “Both the girls and boys divisions have a fantastic opportunity to observe the play of talented athletes who have been playing and coaching for many years.”

Good luck to all of the teams competing this weekend on their quest for glory. Be sure to stop by the U.S. Women’s Indoor National team booth to show your support and don’t miss out on official tournament gear in our vendor village.
