Region 5 Under-16 Teams Earn Trip to National Club Championship

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – June 5, 2014 - The Region 5 Under-16 Regional Club Championship was held at Elden Rettew Stadium in Manheim, Pa. on May 31 and June 1, 2014. After a fantastic two days of hockey, one team walked away victorious and two teams earned qualification to the National Club Championships next month in Lancaster, Pa. Ten teams competed for the championship title: East Coast, High Styx, Horizon, KaPow, Mystx, Nook Hockey, PA Mavericks, PA Power, WC Eagles and Xcalibur.

Pool play ended with #1 ranked WC Eagles and #38 ranked Nook Hockey taking the top two seeds in Pool A. PA Mavericks, ranked #7, and #3 ranked Xcalibur beat out the competition to take the top two seeds in Pool B.

Both semi-final games proved extremely competitive with both ending up in shootouts to break the ties. The first semi-final game featured WC Eagles versus Xcalibur. Xcalibur scored the first goal and forced WC Eagles to come from behind and net two more goals to secure a win. A dedicated Xcalibur team would not be denied and tied the game with minutes left. WC Eagles prevailed winning the shootout.

The second semi-final game saw PA Mavericks and Nook Hockey battle to a 2-2 tie and a shootout decided the second game in a row. PA Mavericks prevailed in the sudden death round over Nook Hockey.

In the final, WC Eagles and PA Mavericks duked it out for the #1 finish. WC Eagles took home the gold with a 3-0 win. Both teams will be moving on to the National Club Championships.

“Region 5 has some of the best field hockey in the country, and we knew that this weekend’s Regional Club Championships at Manheim Central would be no easy task,” said Chelton Hunter, PA Mavericks Head Coach. “After going 4-0 in pool play, our team played well and earned a trip to the finals over a great Nook Hockey team. We played hard in the finals, but couldn't break down the offensively minded WC Eagles squad. Overall, the weekend was a great event from the beautiful weather to the organization of the tournament.”

Congratulations to both WC Eagles and PA Mavericks!
