Young Athlete Generously Gives Back to the Game
While many high school freshman are dreaming of driving cars or stressing out about upcoming exams, Caroline Epstein of New Jersey took a moment to look outside of herself and found a way to give back to a greater cause in the sport that she loves, field hockey. Caroline fell in love with hockey as soon as she began playing in 6th grade and has continued to grow through the game, playing for Ranney School in New Jersey and Surf and Sand FHC based out of Monmouth College.
For her 15th birthday, instead of asking for gifts, Caroline selflessly asked that friends and family help her raise money to donate to USA Field Hockey’s FUNdamental Field Hockey and You Go Girl programs.
USA Field Hockey: For your 15th birthday instead of receiving gifts, you so kindly requested donations be made to USA Field Hockey. Where did this generous idea stem from?
CE: I love field hockey and it brings me so much joy. I love to play outside, even if it’s only for five minutes. I know that the game isn’t that big in the U.S. and I wanted to help other kids learn field hockey and have the opportunity to enjoy playing as much as I do.
USA Field Hockey: Among USA Field Hockey’s various programs, why are you requesting the donations to go to FUNdamental Field Hockey and You Go Girl?
CE: When I was looking online, I came across the two programs and I felt like they were really great programs that help people to get involved in the sport and I wanted to be a part of that in some way.
USA Field Hockey: You prove that no matter what age an athlete, umpire, coach or fan is, everyone can still make an impact. Why do you think it’s important to invest in the sport that’s invested in you and the community?
CE: I think that if you really enjoy something, you should try to grow it and share it with other people.
USA Field Hockey: What are your future goals and aspirations on and off the pitch?
CE: I plan to continue playing field hockey and I want to play in college. I’ve already taught some of my friends how to play field hockey and I hope to continue that as well. Some of them really liked it, but others not so much.
