USA Field Hockey Weekly Report - Week of April 7, 2014

The U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Indoor Squads kicked off competition last night at the 2014 Indoor Pan Am Cup in Montevideo, Uruguay. Both national teams took on the host country and started the tournament on a strong note. U.S. Men capitalized 4-0 while the U.S. Women defeated Uruguay 3-2. Best of luck to both teams as they continue play through the rest of the week.

Another Umpire advances in the FIH World! We are all very excited and proud that Suzi Sutton has recently been elevated to a GRADE 1 status as an FIH Umpire. Suzi has worked very hard and has committed herself to becoming the best umpire possible. Grade 1 is the third of a five step process for umpires to attain a World Panel Grading (the highest possible by the FIH). At her two most recent tournaments, the Pan American Cup in Medoza, Argentina and the South American ODESUR Games in Santiago, Chile, Suzi performed well and achieved the necessary markings from FIH assigned Umpire Managers and Technical Delegates to be upgraded. Congratulations to Suzi as we look forward toward her very long and successful umpiring career.

The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine recently released an interesting scientific article regarding overuse injuries and burnout in youth sports. It is a lengthy but worthwhile read for anyone involved in youth sports, especially parents and coaches. The article offers a detailed look into the ever-growing world of adolescent athletics and offers preventative solutions to combat injuries and burnout, which have become much more prevalent in recent years. Click here for the full read.

The time has come: Be on the lookout tomorrow as we announce the 2014 Hall of Fame Induction and Honorary Membership class. We are so excited to bring back this prestigious event and celebrate this year’s class and the history of our sport. For more information about the Hall of Fame, please visit this link.

As a reminder from our friends at NFHCA, registration for their coaching clinics is now open! For further details please click here.

Congratulations to all of the NCAA DIII field hockey programs who have strived for excellence both on the field and in the classroom. The Late Show with David Letterman: Earlier today, I called the president of CBS, the guy who owns the network, Leslie Moonves, and said, "I'm retiring." There was a pause and then he said, "Who is this?" Immediately after I made that call, CBS posted a guard by the office supplies.

Have a great week!!
