USA Field Hockey Weekly- Week of September 2, 2013
The summer is officially over, which means the new field hockey season is underway in earnest. All around the country preseason training is in the bag and competitive play is underway. Whether you are playing at NCAA, club at university (within the National Field Hockey League), high school or middle school you all have the same dreams, to improve every day and do be the best individually as a team that you can be. We wish you all the best for the 2013/2014 season.
The next wave of field hockey players will also be introduced to the game for the first time this Fall, most of the USA Field Hockey's FUNdamental Field Hockey programs that you are putting on take place over coming months after school at Elementary Schools, at YMCAs, at Boys and Girls Clubs, at Parks & Rec fields. For the hundreds of you volunteering your time to introduce our sport to 7-11 year olds we absolutely commend you - you are field hockey’s heroes. 215 of last year’s inaugural 250 programs are offering FUNdamental Field Hockey again and many kids will be getting their second experience within the sport and some will be first timers.
Programs are linked to clubs, there are now 94 clubs who mentor FUNdamental Field Hockey programming, for the kids who get bitten by the field hockey bug – playing at a clubs is the next opportunity – so the connection to a club is essential. I should also mention that the program has expanded further with 109 new programs popping up throughout 2013, taking the total of programs to 324. Harrow Sports (www.harrowsports.com) continue to be a magnificent partner to the program, and alongside the support of Procter & Gamble have enabled us as a sport to give so many kids the opportunity to get into field hockey. If you would like to get involved with FUNdamental Field Hockey please do reach out to our Sports Development team at firstname.lastname@example.org. It is the passion, commitment and generosity of field hockey folks around the country that is the key to growing the game.
As you return from your long holiday weekend, it is time to start celebrating the next major holiday, National Field Hockey Day on Saturday, September 14th!
USA Field Hockey is excited to commemorate its second year of the initiative which hopes to increase awareness of the sport, inspire greater participation and celebrate field hockey nationwide. Members are encouraged to participate by playing, coaching, sharing, umpiring or watching the game all weekend long. Prizes will be awarded for individuals or teams who get creative with their celebration, so please let us know what you're up to that weekend by using social media (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook) or contacting us at email@example.com.
