Mid-Atlantic/South earns Women's National Championship title
NORFOLK, Va. – May 29, 2013 – Mid-Atlantic/South and Pennsylvania played for the championship title this afternoon on the final day of the Women’s National Championship at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. After seventy minutes of spirited, action packed field hockey, Mid-Atlantic/South came away with a 4-2 victory over Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania scored minutes after the match began, but Michelle Kasold (Chapel Hill, N.C.) who has been a leading goal scorer throughout the tournament, quickly evened the match in the 12th minute. Pennsylvania took the lead again in the 19th minute with a goal by Katie O’Donnell (Blue Bell, Pa.).
In the second half, SI’s Female College Athlete of the Year Loren Shealy (Chapel Hill, N.C.) recorded her first goal of the tournament and Michelle Vittese (Cherry Hill, N.J.) finished off the scoring in the 44th minute for the 4-2 win.
Midwest/California finished fifth after a 4-2 victory over New England/North and New Jersey finished third with a 2-1 win over the Under-21’s.
Awards were given to athletes for outstanding individual tournament performances. Kasold and O’Donnell each scored five goals and were presented with the “Leading Goal Scorer” award. Mid-Atlantic/South’s Katelyn Falgowski (Landenburg, Pa.) earned “Player of the Final” and Rachel Dawson (Berlin, N.J.) was awarded with “Player of the Tournament.”
U.S. head coach Craig Parnham will announce the athletes selected to the Women’s National Squad tomorrow.
