Women's National Championship rule variations

May 23, 2013, 11:11 a.m. (ET)

In the days following the conclusion of the Women’s National Championship, USA Field Hockey will announce the 2013-14 U.S. Women’s National Team as well as the team set to compete at the upcoming International Hockey Federation’s World League Semi Final in London.

At the World League Semi Final, the International Hockey Federation will implement the following variations to the rules of hockey and the FIH has granted USA Field Hockey special permission to play these variations at the Women’s National Championship event only. Please note that these variations are not being adopted for use at any other USA Field Hockey event.

The first variation is as follows:

Players may play the ball above shoulder height provided that it is not dangerous or leading to danger.

The current rule states that players must not play the ball with any part of the stick when the ball is above shoulder height except that defenders are permitted to use the stick to stop or deflect a shot at goal at any height.

The second variation is as follows:

After the award of a penalty corner, the teams will be placed on a 45 second clock in which the penalty corner must be inserted before the expiring of the 45 seconds. Any breach of this rule by either the attack or defense will result in a misconduct card issued to the captain of the offending team.

Again, please note that these variations are not being considered for any other USA Field Hockey event and should not be played with at any level.
