The Cal Cup, located in Moorpark, CA and to be competed this upcoming weekend, provides current and aspiring players the opportunity to compete for a position on the men’s national senior or development squad for the next calendar year. The competition is stiff between the players and teams all vying for a place on the USA roster and the honors to be the Cal Cup Champion. It has been pleasing to see the Camarillo Cougars win the tournament for the past 2 years as a number of current and past national team members are a part of this team. This domestic competition provides our players the best opportunity outside the national team fixtures to compete and test their skills against quality opponents.
The addition of the U-20 division to the Cal Cup will only enhance the opportunities and experiences that our younger players will gain from competing in the tournament. We thank the Cal Cup Organizing Committee for including the division this year. The increased opportunities at an earlier age for domestic and then international competition will only enhance the entire men’s program.. Chris Clements, USA Field Hockey head men’s national team coach, looks forward to seeing all the players compete as well as watching some of the U-16 and U-14 Boys Divisions for future talent. We will also be naming a U-20 and U-17 National squad at the conclusion of the tournament.
The 108 athletes participating in the 2013 Women’s National Championship in Norfolk, Va., May 23-29, have been confirmed. Some of the best field hockey players in the nation will compete for the title of regional champions, but far more importantly contend for a spot on the U.S. Women’s National Team roster. Head coach Craig Parnham will be evaluating matches and selecting outstanding players from the pool of participants to represent Team USA on the international stage.
USA Field Hockey is in the process of taking applications for the new U14 girls division at Festiva this year, the initial deadline is Wednesday, May 29th, so please get your applications in. The expansion of Festival to include U-14 girls (and U-15 and U-21 boys) is one of many initiatives we are undertaking that together will help develop the game in the U.S. Festival is about celebrating our sport and spending a holiday weekend with family and friends playing the game we all love. Opening three divisions will give younger athletes and boys the opportunity to participate in the largest amateur hockey event in the world. We are excited to have more families join us in Palm Beach County this year for what will be another exciting holiday weekend filled with hockey.
Lastly, we’d like to cordially invite family, friends and fans of
USA Field Hockey to join us for a relaxing evening on the Elizabeth River and an opportunity to meet Craig Parhnam, Head Coach of the Women's National Team, and more High Performance staff members. The meet and greet will include a buffet dinner, drinks, sunset views and island sounds at a private, waterfront home in Norfolk, VA this Friday, May 24th from 7-10pm. Late Night with Jimmy Fallon: “A town in Minnesota has appointed a 4-year-old boy to be its mayor. People got pretty annoyed when he said his first plan was "waising taxes."
Have a great week!
