Men’s Under-20 Rosters are Finalized for Cal Cup Tournament
The official list of athletes to compete in the U-20 Division at Cal Cup has been determined

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – May 19, 2013 – It’s a pivotal moment in these athletes’ careers yet their names weren’t engraved into a brass trophy or etched onto the surface of a prestigious medal.

Instead, their names were methodically handwritten on a piece of clean lined paper. To earn a mark on those lines is worth more than any piece of showcase hardware these elite athletes have been awarded thus far – they have made the official 2013 Cal Cup roster.  Their years of practice and pure determination have earned them a ticket to play in front of U.S. Men’s National Team Head Coach Chris Clements and his staff for the chance to represent Team USA. Now that the final U-20 rosters have been announced, the nation patiently waits to see who will be worthy of wearing Team USA jerseys. Because Cal Cup serves as a selection process for the U-17, U-20 and Senior National Team squad, the best competitors in the country will be gathering on the campus of Moorpark College near Los Angeles in Southern California in hopes of earning a spot on the USA Field Hockey team.

What started out as a tournament with only six men's teams in 1972 has expanded to an annual event that gathers over 140 teams and nearly 2,000 athletes ranging in age over Memorial Day weekend. Tom Harris, a dedicated field hockey enthusiast and creator of the tournament, is entering his 41st year of heading Cal Cup. The divisions consist of Super Men, Competitive Men as well as U-20, U-16 and U-14 Boys. Once the tournament commences, Clements and Assistant U.S. National Team Coach Ben Maruquin will be assessing the games and selecting top athletes to extend the ultimate invitation. Clements will make his final decision on Thursday, May 30, a day the selected Senior, U-20 and U-17 men hope to achieve new heights. Through the advance game knowledge and stick skills they have built upon through the High Performance platform the selected athletes are in top condition to display their tactical and physical skills.

“In April we started our East Coast High Performance program with a series of training camps open to all young men on the East Coast,” said Rutger Wiese, East Coast High Performance coach. “The goals were very clear from the beginning: introduce as many boys to high performance training as possible, develop the overall skill level and create an atmosphere in which the boys can excel, ultimately resulting in the East Coast High Performance Team that will compete at the Cal Cup.”

“The evolution of our high performance program is developing as is the game for boys and men,” said Clements. “We are looking to further the opportunities for boys and men and this will have a carry on effect to the performance of our national teams. We need the regions taking responsibility and developing players in a performance environment. I am glad to see the progress on the east coast and the potentials of growth into further regions and performance of the boys. The work that our high performance staff are doing is critical to our success. I have visited all our sites over the season and am pleased with the increase in quality of play across all regions.”

Following Cal Cup, the U-17 and U-20 athletes selected will have the opportunity to participate in a four-day training camp at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Cali. in June.
