FEASTERVILLE, Pa. – U.S. Women’s Indoor Team Head Coach Denise Zelenak coached the U.S. Women’s Indoor Team to two victories and a draw against Canada at the Sportsplex in Feasterville, Pa. on August 3 and August 4. The U.S. opened competition with a 4-4 draw followed by a dominating 7-1 win on Saturday. The squad picked up its second win in the final match, 4-2, finishing the series with a 2-0-1 record.
“I was very pleased with the squad’s performance in the CanAm Series,” said Zelenak. “Overall I was impressed by how quickly everyone adjusted to the new 5's format and rules. The changes made for a lot of exciting play and showcased the players skills and transitional speed, both offensively and defensively. This was another positive step forward for the program and gets us closer to our goal of winning the 2014 Pan American Cup.”
Veteran Ali McEvoy (Gilbertsville, Pa.), who was named to the U.S. Women’s National Team in May, was the leading scorer with a total of six goals on Saturday, August 3. Amanda Fleischut (Doylestown, Pa.) scored two goals and seven other U.S. players tallied one goal apiece.
“The CanAm series was a tremendous success for our squad,” said U.S. captain Kimberly Tunnel. “Not only were the individual outcomes of the matches exciting, but the development of our squad throughout the series was great. It was amazing to be able to play in front of our home crowd and it seemed like the new format really engaged the spectators. Being able to play against Canada early on in the transition from six to five players has given us a great building block as we prepare for the Pan American Cup.”
Zelenak will assess play from this past weekend and select another travel squad for the Germany Tour scheduled for January of 2014. The tournament may be USA’s final preparation for the next Pan American Indoor Cup in April 2014 in Montevideo, Uruguay that will serve as a qualifier for the Indoor World Cup.
