USA Field Hockey Weekly Report-Week of September 17, 2012

Over this past weekend, many of you celebrated our inaugural National Field Hockey Day. USA Field Hockey would like to thank each of you that helped by spreading the word, participating in the game, or sharing the sport with others. The weekend started with a Throwback Thursday competition which encouraged members to submit ‘vintage’ or ‘old school’ photos for a chance to win a $50 Harrow Sports gift card. For a trip down memory lane and some great laughs, check out our favorites on the USA Field Hockey Facebook page. For the remainder of the weekend, we saw several ‘celebrations’ including visits to The White House, free parent and youth clinics, milestone wins, and many of you just having a good time celebrating our great sport. You can see some of our favorite captured photos on Facebook as well. Again, thank you to each of you that participated. It truly was a special initiative that not only spread the word about our sport, but hopefully bought our community closer together. Can’t wait for next year!

Pan American Junior Championships  Our Junior Teams have had great success so far in Guadalajara, Mexico. With an undefeated record, the U.S. Men's Junior National Team finished at the top of their pool over the weekend.  The U.S. Men defeated Venezuela 5-1, Barbados 5-4, and Chile 2-0 in pool play.  They will now face Mexico on September 19 and Argentina on September 20.

The U.S. Women's Junior Team wrapped up pool play with three shutout victories over opponents Venezuela, Paraguay and Jamaica. The U.S. Women advance to the semi-final on September 19 against Argentina. The top two men's teams will automatically qualify for the 2013 Junior World Cup. The top three women's teams qualify, pending the outcome of the remaining matches and the host of the Junior World Cup.  Follow the U.S. Men and Women in Guadalajara on the USA Field Hockey Pan American Junior Championship event page

The decision to add new voices was difficult as this past years’ task force was very productive, however USA Field Hockey looks forward to the valuable insights the new and remaining task force members will provide the association as we move forward. I would like to thank Lauren Cornthwaite, Karen Klassner, Andy Muir, Tina Reinprecht and Larry Zappone for devoting their time and commitment to the past years’ discussions. I look forward to working with them in future task forces.

Jimmy Kimmel Live: "In Chicago, 26,000 public school teachers went on strike, the first teachers' strike they have had in 25 years. Teachers are calling it a last resort. City officials are saying it's unnecessary and wrong, and students are calling it awesome.”

Have a great week!
