GUADALAJARA – The U.S. Women's Junior Team had another dominant performance tonight, blanking Paraguay 8-0, in the second match of the 2012 Junior Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. The U.S. improves to a 2-0 record in the tournament with three matches remaining in the preliminary rounds.
The U.S. wore "Never Forget" on their shin guards and some wrote "Never Forget" on their forearms in remembrance of the tragedy that struck our country 11 years ago today.
"We made many improvements from our match against Venezuela yesterday and the emotion that was involved with playing on September 11th brought a lot of energy to today's match. It was an honor to wear the red, white and blue and represent the USA today," said Kelsey Harbin.
Northwestern University's Nikki Parsley ((Milford, DE) had another outstanding performance, scoring two goals in the first half and one in the second half for a hat trick. Parsley now totals five goals scored in just two matches.
Emma Bozek (Cortlandt Manor, NY) and Heather Morris (Pottstown, Pa) each added a goal apiece in the first half. The U.S. held a comfortable 4-0 lead at halftime.
The U.S. finally capitalized on a penalty corner in the second half. Kelsey Harbin (Escondido, Cali) sent a shot into the net in the 43rd minute. Bozek also converted on a penalty corner six minutes following Harbin's goal.
At the 59 minute mark, a penalty stroke was awarded to the U.S. Katie Gerzabek (Springfield, Pa) was selected to challenge Paraguay's goalkeeper. Gerzabek finished to increase the U.S. lead 7-0. Parsley finished off the scoring with a field goal in the final minutes of play.
"Tonight was another positive performance with a step in the right direction," said Head Coach Nick Conway. "Our goal is to be playing to the best of our ability come the critical matches at the end of the tournament."
