National Hockey Festival to kick off on Thanksgiving Day in Palm Beach

Nov. 21, 2012, 10:57 a.m. (ET)

Palm Beach County, FL - Thanksgiving Day in the hockey world only means one thing; Festival.

USA Field Hockey and the Palm Beach County Sports Commission will host the 2012 National Hockey Festival, presented by CranBarry, at the International Polo Club in Wellington, Florida, November 22-25. Over 200 teams and 137 clubs from across the country have arrived in Florida to celebrate the holiday with some hockey and sunshine.

“National Hockey Festival is a Thanksgiving tradition in the hockey community,” said Karen Collins, Event Director, USA Field Hockey. “We are excited to return to Palm Beach County after spending the last two years in Phoenix, Arizona. Palm Beach County was the home of Festival in 2005 and has hosted the event several times in the past. We can not wait to kick off the event tomorrow.”

The participating teams will contend for titles in various divisions, including Under-16 and Under- 19 girls, as well as women’s open and mixed adult. Festival remains the largest event of its kind in the world and is expected to be the largest amateur sporting event hosted by the Palm Beach County Sports Commission this decade.

The International Polo Club is a remarkable sports complex that maintains over 200 acres of land, consisting of eight polo fields. The venue was a key component in Palm Beach County’s successful bid. USA Field Hockey will layout 26 field hockey pitches over five polo fields and over 125 college coaches will be in attendance to recruit the very best talent for their collegiate rosters.

“This is exciting news for the business community in Palm Beach and Wellington” says John Wash, International Polo Club’s President of Club Operations. “International Polo Club is proud to be able to participate and showcase our community and property, and we are looking forward to hosting this event.”

"We are delighted to have the opportunity to partner with USA Field Hockey and be a part of their mission to grow the sport in the United States. As your host, the International Polo Club will present you with a venue and experience that cannot be easily replicated. We are glad to share the experience with thousands of field hockey athletes, coaches and their families participating in the 2012 National Hockey Festival," said George Linley, Executive Director, Palm Beach Sports Commission.

Games will take place Thursday through Saturday from 7:30am to 4:30pm and on Sunday, November 25 from 8:00am to 12:00pm. For more information on National Hockey Festival, visit
