CHULA VISTA, Cali – Mexico cruised past Guatemala with a 8-0 victory in the opening match of World League Round 1 at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Cali. this afternoon. The tournament features Guatemala, Mexico and the United States with the winner advancing to World League Round 2 in early 2013.

Guatemala is competing in their first international tournament with their Senior National Team and are looking at this tournament as a platform to gain experience on the international stage.

“Field hockey is a new sport in Guatemala and this is the first international tournament for our Senior National Team,” said Guatemala coach Arsenio Lopez Deloya. “We are going to work on our errors from today’s match against the U.S. Team tomorrow and continue to learn and grow as a team. We intend to give it our best in every match.”

Mexico has a rest day tomorrow and will face the U.S. on Sunday. The last time these two opponents faced each other was at the XVI Pan American Games last October. Mexico defeated the U.S. in the preliminary rounds, but the U.S. bounced back to defeat Mexico 6-0 for a fifth place finish overall.

“We have more years of experience than Guatemala and expected this result,” said Mexico coach Sergio Veliz. “We knew we had to win this match first and are now focused on facing the U.S. on Sunday.”
