Q& A with USA Field Hockey's Fundraising Manager on inaugural fundraising year

Dec. 27, 2012, 3:39 p.m. (ET)

In 2012, USA Field Hockey announced the establishment of a fundraising program to help provide opportunities to grow the sport of field hockey in the United States.  With the end of the calendar year quickly approaching, usafieldhockey.com sat down with fundraising manager, Meagan Connolly, to ask her for her thoughts on this inaugural year of fundraising.

Since establishing a fundraising program in March, how would you describe the feedback we have received from our audience?

I continue to be amazed by the amount of positive feedback we receive. We have a dedicated audience that all share the same passion and goal to grow our sport in the United States and continue to create opportunities for our athletes to be successful at every level. I have had the opportunity to travel across the country to meet one-on-one with friends of USA Field Hockey and it is really refreshing to be able to meet so many fans and learn about their experiences. If you’re interested in supporting USA Field Hockey and meet the next time I am in your area, please don’t hesitate to contact me!

What do you find the most challenging with establishing the program?

When you start any program it’s always going to be a challenge in the first year. I think the most challenging portion is establishing the culture for our audience to be afforded the opportunity to give back to our sport that has done so much for their family. I will forever be grateful for this sport because the amount of opportunities I had to grow as an individual in all aspects of life is amazing. I know I wouldn’t be where I am today without USA Field Hockey.

What inspired the London and Beyond campaign?

During the 2008 Beijing Olympics we had an increased amount of support from our fans that year. Since we are kicking off our inaugural year of fundraising, what better way than to incorporate the 2012 London Olympics, especially since we qualified for the Games by winning the 2011 Pan American Games! The goal is to recruit 2,012 gifts of ANY size ($5, $25, $100, etc.) by December 31st and we are almost there!

We noticed there have been new giving levels established.  Can you describe each level and the incentives that are associated with the level?

A gift of ANY size, regardless of the amount will continue to make a huge impact on our sport. However, since we do have many people that would like to increase their support at a greater capacity, we thought it would be beneficial to reward these supporters. We have established three different giving levels:

Applebee Society: $2,500 and above
Incentives:  Board of Director Meeting Minutes, Access to team and coaches, priority ticketing and seating including the Olympic Games and World Cup

Olympic Club: $1,000- $2,499
Incentives:  Board of Director Meeting Minutes, Access to team and coaches

President’s Club: $500-$999
Incentives:  Board of Director Meeting Minutes

Moving forward in years to come, what are the goals of the fundraising program?

USA Field Hockey established a fundraising program with the goals to continue to develop our game at all levels.  We have implemented many new programs in the last two years to help assist our audience and create opportunities for our athletes, families, coaches, officials and fans. More importantly, we are hopeful that this program can act as a liaison from our organization to our audience and continue to cultivate and engage our fans in many different aspects of the game.
