Junior and Senior Womens National Indoor Squads to compete in European Tours

Twelve members of the Senior Women’s National Indoor Team have been selected to participate in the RohrMax Cup in Vienna, Austria, January 4-6. The tournament will feature teams from Austria, Switzerland and the Czech Republic, exposing the U.S. to a variety of different playing styles.  

Multi-year veterans on the squad include, Susan Ciufo, Ashley Dalisera, Maria Keesling, Ali McEvoy, Rachael Bloemker Milne, Kim Tunell, and Emily Valeo. MaEvoy and Bloemker have toured extensively and bring a wealth of experience to the team.

“As we prepare for future Indoor Pan American qualifiers, it is important for us to consistently hone our skills against strong international indoor programs,” explains Denise Zelenak, Senior Women’s Indoor National Team Head Coach. “We are very pleased to have the opportunity to compete in Austria at the 33rd RohrMax Cup as it is a highly competitive event and will have very strong European teams participating.”

Shortly after the New Year, members of the Junior Women’s National Indoor team will depart for Germany to participate in two-day tournaments in Bremen and Hamburg. They will compete against junior and senior club teams in both locations.  

Veterans on the squad include, Marissa Balleza, Kate Ferrara, Meghan McCullough, Mary (Kali) Vicars, Angie Virtu, and Lindsay von der Luft. The six other members will be competing on the indoor international level for the first time.

“The Germany tour is ideal preparation for the forthcoming Junior Indoor Pan American Cup,” said Rennie Milne, Junior Women’s Indoor National Team Head Coach. “The caliber of indoor hockey in Germany is world class and the continued access to high level competition is imperative for the success and continued development of the junior players and their performance in the 2013 Pan American Cup.”  

Over the past eighteen months, the women’s indoor program has grown to include over seventy athletes at the senior, junior and developmental level.  These tours will help members of the U.S. program achieve their goal of becoming competitive at the highest levels of indoor field hockey.
