COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Today, USA Field Hockey announced the athletes participating in the 2012 Junior Women’s Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico, September 10-23. Many of the athletes selected will put aside their collegiate uniform to wear the red, white and blue and represent the U.S on the international stage. The top two countries to podium finish will automatically qualify for the International Hockey Federation’s 7th Women's Junior World Cup.

“We need to finish ahead of nine other teams in order to qualify for the Junior World Cup,” said Nick Conway, U.S. Junior Women’s Head Coach. “For our team this is our sole objective.  We know that there will be challenges along the way, but as with all tournaments we will strive to adapt and overcome them.”

There is a fierce group of contenders that the U.S. will need to face before positioning themselves on top of the podium. In Pool B, the U.S. will go head to head against Chile, Jamaica, Paraguay, Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela. With a successful bout in the preliminary pool rounds, the U.S. could face their biggest rival, Argentina or Canada, before reaching the podium.

“Our pool is one such challenge as there are unknown quantities in Venezuela and Paraguay along with the traditional threat of Chile,” said Conway. “Our goal is obviously to provide ourselves with an opportunity of qualification to the Junior World Cup by competing in a semi-final on September 19th.”

The U.S. will open the tournament against Venezuela on September 10. Up next will be Paraguay, followed by Trinidad and Tobago and Chile, before closing out pool play against Jamaica on September 17.
