U-21 Team Ties Ireland 2-2

March 23, 2011, 9:55 a.m. (ET)
The USA U-21 squad took on a select U-21 plus side from Ireland and battled to a 2-2 tie.  The game started a little slow for the USA side, as they gave up two early goals in the first five minutes of the game, both on penalty
corners.  The rest of the half was fairly even ending with no additional goals scored by either team.
The USA came back strong in the second half and notched their first goal of the tour around the 45th minute of the game, when Ali McEvoy scored off of a flick.  The game then got interesting when the USA received two yellow cards that overlapped and played an athlete down for approximately 10 minutes.  The USA held strong and only gave up one shot during this span.  With the squad back to full strength, USA tied the game at 2-2 when Maxine Fluharty scored a goal off of a rebound on a corner around the 10 minute mark.
"We gave up two set piece goals in a five minute span, but then didn't give up another corner the rest of the game," said Ainslee Lamb, Head Coach. "To be down two and then to persevere and play better hockey  the rest of the way, is a tribute to the character of the kids in the program. The exposure to international hockey and the
physical aspects that come with it became a reality to the group and that is growth that we will benefit from moving forward."
This was the first of two matches the U-21 team will play against the Irish. The team will be back at it tomorrow, March 22nd, at 11:30am local time, taking on the Irish before traveling to Germany where they will have three matches against the Germans.
