USA Men’s National Team Selection Opportunity

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – USA Field Hockey is pleased to announce collaboration with the California Cup Committee for the 2011 California Cup to serve as a selection opportunity for the USA Men’s National Team. The 2011 California Cup will be held May 27-30 on the campus of Moorpark College, just outside of Los Angeles. The Cal Cup is a longstanding, distinguished tournament that has grown to include 140 teams and over 2,000 athletes.

The selection opportunity will enable athletes that are not currently part of the USA Men’s National Team, to be evaluated and stand for selection to the squad. By competing at the California Cup, identified athletes will be provided with further National squad playing opportunities at the elite level if their performance warrants.

The tournament is divided into thirteen team divisions. All athletes interested in a selection opportunity to the Men’s National squad should register with a Super Division Team to enable National Team coaches to evaluate at the highest level.

Previously, USA Field Hockey has held a Senior National Championship for athletes interested in playing opportunities on the Men’s National Team. However, due to the addition of the International Hockey Federation’s Champions Challenge II Tournament, July 3-9, Lille, France, to the MNT program, USA Field Hockey has decided to partner with the California Cup Committee. The Junior National Championship remains as scheduled.

“This is a chance to support a well founded, local event while simultaneously providing an opportunity for presently unidentified athletes to gain selection onto the national squad,” said Nick Conway, Head Coach of the Men’s National Team. “USA Field Hockey is appreciative for the opportunity to collaborate with the California Cup Committee in this manner.”

Information and questions regarding 2011 California Cup Super Division Team opportunities can be directed through Nick Conway at nconway@usafieldhockey.com.
