USA Men Fall to Bloemendaal

Feb. 19, 2011, 9:45 p.m. (ET)

The USA Men’s National Team competed against Bloemendaal today, in their first match of a six game test series in Chula Vista, CA. USA fell to Bloemendall 8-2.

"I think that we're all a bit disappointed at the level of our performance on the pitch today," said Nick Conway, USA Head Coach. "We're very aware that losing 8-2 is an unacceptable result but this was the type of game that makes us aware of what level we need to be playing at. We had a few positives in the second half and we're going to look to build on those for the remaining 5 games in our series starting with Bloemendaal tomorrow."

Scoring opportunities were hard to come by, as a talented Bloemendaal team kept USA out of the offensive zone for a large part of the match. USA was unable to get any goals on the board before heading into halftime. Bloemendaal led USA 3-0 going into the second half.

USA scored their first goal in the fifty-sixth minute. John Ginolfi (Moorpark, CA) sent a reverse stick shot past a diving goalkeeper to add one to the boards for USA. USA’s second goal came late in the second half on a penalty corner. Will Holt (Camarillo, CA) drag flicked a shot to the upper left corner of the cage. Bloemendaal was more successful at taking advantage of penalty corner opportunities, converting four out of their seven into goals.

USA had multiple scoring opportunities, but were unable to put the ball in the net.

"Of course none of us are happy with a loss like this one," said Jon Ginolfi. "Bloemendaal took advantage of our mistakes today and really capitalized on them.  Hopefully tomorrow we can come out with a bit more energy, a bit more focus and give a better fight in game two."

Elliott Seleska (Chelmsford, England) played in his first international match as a member of the USA Men’s National Team today.

USA will also compete against France and Canada in this series. The schedule for the remaining matches is as follows with all times listed in local PT and EST in parenthesis. Highlights and results will be posted to the USA Field Hockey website immediately following the conclusion of every match.
