USA Advances to Finals In Four Nations Series

ROSARIO, ARGENTINA – USA had a strong performance against Australia this evening to come away with their second win of the Four Nations tournament in Rosario, Argentina. With this win, USA is guaranteed a spot in the final tomorrow evening at 8:30pm (6:30pm EST). The opponent will be Argentina, who beat Germany 3-2, following the USA verses Australia match.

“We came into this game knowing that it was going to be a hard fought match,” said Keli Smith, USA Team Captain. “We wanted a chance to play in the final tomorrow and we knew we had to take care of this game first. We are very happy with the result.”

USA came out fast, quickly applying pressure to Australia’s defense. USA gained an advantage by creating opportunities in the circle, resulting in penalty corners. Claire Laubach (San Diego, CA) put the first goal on the boards with a drag flick from the top of the circle. Australia had multiple scoring opportunities but were unable to convert any into goals. USA was up one goal to Australia at halftime.

Much of the second half was played in the mid field, with both teams battling to get the ball on their side of the twenty-five. Another penalty corner opportunity resulted in a second goal for USA, again scored off of a drag flick by Laubach.

Australia came back fighting and quickly applied pressure to USA defense. Australia created a shooting opportunity from the right side of the circle that resulted in a goal knocked past keeper Jackie Kintzer (Chapel Hill, NC).

Only down by one goal, Australia fought hard to tie up the match before time ran out. With two minutes remaining, Paige Selenski finalized a win for USA with a field goal. USA defeated Australia 3-1 and will move on to the finals tomorrow evening against Argentina.

“We are hoping to play Argentina in the final tomorrow,” said Lee Bodimeade, Head Coach. “We came to this tournament to play the best teams and I think Argentina is the best team here and that is how we will improve our game. I think it will be an exciting and close match.”
